About Raise the Roof
Shaking Hands
  • America is facing a mortgage crisis like never before. The implosion of the residential mortgage market has resulted in a vast number of homeowners defaulting on their second mortgages.
  • Approximately $1 trillion dollars in second mortgage debt is currently outstanding, and with future default rates estimated at 18 percent, an additional $180 billion in defaulted second mortgages could be on the horizon.
  • While these overwhelming numbers have created financial headaches for homeowners and lenders alike, Raise the Roof is innovating a solution to America's mortgage crisis by creating opportunities for homeowners to satisfy their second mortgage debt through community service.
  • A 501(c)(3) nonprofit, Raise the Roof is uniquely forgiving the principal on second mortgage loans for homeowners who perform a specified number of volunteer service hours.
  • Through Raise the Roof's unique model, homeowners benefit from becoming free of their defaulted mortgages, banks benefit from becoming free of their defaulted liens and the greater community benefits from increased volunteerism and new community service projects.
  • By enabling homeowners to begin reconstructing their financial security and re-establishing credit by using community service as a form of currency for repayment, Raise the Roof is pioneering a capital market for community service.
